Take your well deserved break without worry

December 13: Walked to Joseful Dul’s only grocery store.


December 12: Gary made bread and chocolate chip cookies -yummy. The recipes will take some adjusting but that is part of the adventure.


December 11: Our first day of sunshine. Gary was going to make bread but we decided to take advantage of the good picture taking weather. I have to watch the GPS - it wants to take us down these small country roads - some of which are closed in winter. We drove to Frydlant near the border between Czech and Poland. All tourist sights have closed for the season so we could only walk around.

December 10: Today we drove to Liberec to purchase my train ticket to Stuttgart.

The ticket was more than I wanted to spend. I look forward to being with Marci and Alexia at the Christmas Market so I can justify the cost.

We had a small problem. The GPS can’t recognize when a bridge is not for vehicles (had to back track) a pedestrian zone (thank goodness we saw the sign) a one way only for trains (the police where right there and helped us get back on the right road. NO TICKET hooray).

No more quotes - Gary doesn’t like them.


December 8: More snow! It’s beginning to feel like Christmas.


I said I wasn’t going to talk about laundry but....

I am grateful for a clothes washer that doesn’t take 2 hours to wash my clothes. I am grateful for my clothes dryer so I don’t have to put clothes on the hot water registers or have clothes drying on a rack in my dining room. I am grateful for nylon, they dry the quickest and retain their softness. We faced this obstacle in Lugano, Hyeres and now here in the Czech Republic. We can overcome but I still like my creature comforts.

December 6: Instead of writing about laundry, what we had for dinner etc. I thought a quote of the day would be nice so here goes

December 5: We awake to snow - how wonderful. Now it feels more like December. I rearrange a few cupboards to make cooking easier for Gary - after all I need to make the chef happy. When the chef is happy - I get great meals!!!


The adventure of the grocery store: 1. We had to get change to get a chariot (cart) 2. Some vegetables and fruits (not already packaged) need to be weighted before going to the check out 3. Gary translated a couple of items but asking the clerks still entailed a language barrier 4. Knowing where the item is located is half the battle ( plain yogurt is separated from the fruit/dessert yogurt) 5. Cheese is a total different animal in the Czech Republic - no mozzarella for our pizza so substituted Gruyere. These are just a few of the hurtles we had to jump but we did it - an Olympic metal for us even if it’s only 3rd place.  Never did find the vanilla. Orange Roasted chicken for dinner.


December 4: Petr and Olga served us breakfast (scrambled eggs with: onion and home grown bean sprouts, We also had tomatoes, cucumber, rye bread and butter or cheese and home made berry coffee cake - delicious. Olga and I go to a local store for a few groceries to tide us over under we can get to a large grocery store near Joseful Dul where we will be living for the next 3 1/2 months. We set up the GPS and drive to our new home. We make a few mistakes driving but they are easily correctable. Our new home is very cute and very livable. We will be very comfortable - it’s the language that could be the problem.


December 3: Left for the airport after lunch. Our flight is from Marseilles to Prague. Marta’s family will meet us at the airport and we will stay with them. They are very kind to have us stay with them and we get to experience a real Czech family in their home.


Oops - the plane had a mechanical so had to change planes and we were an hour late getting to Prague.


Petr and Olga are delightful. After getting to their apartment built in 1905 IN THE OLD TOWN with all the modern conveniences, we bundled up (definitely cooler than the cote d’azur) we walked to what I would call a bistro in the cellar at 11:00pm (way after our bed time). We had our first Czech beer which was soothing on the one hand and refreshing on the other hand. The town square by the astronomical clock was all decorated for Christmas. The booths were closed since it was so late. I vow to get back again to see the market in all of it’s glory and buy a couple of beers or mulled wine for Petr and Olga.
